Baby Harper – Orange County NY Newborn Photographer

“For this child, I have prayed.”

I’m so excited to share these images from my most recent newborn portrait session. Baby Harper was a dream to photograph. She only woke up once for a bottle, and then went right back to sleep.  Mom and dad waited a long time for her arrival, but she made it all worth it in the end.

Farm Birthday Party

I had such a great time photographing this little guy’s first birthday party and cake smash at Common Ground Farm in Wappinger’s Falls. It was an awesome place to have a birthday party. The kids got to pet farm animals and catch frogs.

The birthday boy LOVED his cake smash cake, I’ve never seen a baby go at a cake like him!! This lucky boy was surrounded by so much love for his birthday. Happy birthday Leo!  Leo Austin-13

Family Portrait Styling – Orange County NY Family Photographer

Summer and Fall are fantastic times to finally get around to doing your family portraits. The beautiful weather and the gorgeous, natural backdrops (beaches, golden light & lush scenery) make it the perfect time to schedule your family session. One of the first questions I receive when scheduling a family portrait session is “What do we wear?” For many moms, this is the most stressful part of planning for their family photography session.

Gone are the days of matchy-matchy outfits. We’ve all seen the pictures of the entire family in a white or black t-shirt and blue jeans. Don’t dress everyone in the same exact outfit. Instead, choose a color family and then choose some accent colors. Blues, whites, creams, and pastels photograph beautifully in the summer; while plaids, mustard, eggplant, burnt orange and other fall colors are the perfect compliments to fall images. Choosing different shades in a color family are a great way for everyone to compliment each other without matching perfectly. Choosing 1 or 2 members of the family to wear prints in these complimentary colors also adds visual interest to your photographs.

Usually moms are the hardest family members to dress. Dad and the kids are usually fine with wearing whatever mom chooses for them. I suggest mom choosing whatever she feels beautiful and comfortable in, then styling the rest of the family around her outfit.

Fabrics with textures photograph wonderfully too – denim, lace, linen. Accessories are a great way to add personality and give a finished look to your portraits (a necklace or scarf for mom, headbands for girls, hats for boys). These items can also be quickly taken off or put on to add variety to your family portraits. Steer clear of clothing with large logos or graphic prints

When choosing your outfits, think about whether you want your family to be dressed more casually or dressed up. Think about the color scheme in your home and where you want your family portraits displayed. If your home has a neutral color pallet, you might want to choose neutrals with a pop of color. You don’t want to choose colors that will clash with your walls.

Lastly, don’t forget about the shoes. Family portraits are an investment and the small details do matter. You don’t want a beautiful portrait of your family hanging on your wall with your child’s tennis shoes sticking out like a sore thumb.
